The Hatteras Networks carrier class Ethernet service delivery Product Family can be easily and comprehensively managed to ensure quick and accurate fault management, provisioning, inventory management, archival services and operations support for small, medium and even the largest networks.
Hatteras’ multi-level management solutions allow carriers to put the right management solution in the right hands. For the NOC, the Hatteras EMS with its graphical user interface (GUI) provides an ideal solution for a complete network view that allows operators to immediately identify trouble spots, manage network-wide inventory, perform configuration archival services, and even do GUI-based troubleshooting and configuration management. For the craftsperson, the “Cisco-like” command-line interface (CLI) with context-sensitive help supports every aspect of installation, service turn-up and all troubleshooting and maintenance activities. For tradition outside plant staff, TL1 offers a familiar means for provisioning and alarm management. Engineering and operations staff will appreciate the WebManager, an embedded GUI application available on every HN4000 and HN400 network element that can be accessed from any PC with a standard browser – no special applications are required! Finally, all Hatteras products are integrated with IBM Tivoli Software (Netcool Integration) which supports a complete, multi-vendor solution.
Element and network management is only as good as what’s built in to the products themselves. Here are some of the fundamental management capabilities built into every Hatteras product:
- The HN4000 and HN400 communicate using the IEEE 802.3ah standard OAM, which has been certified compliant by Iometrix. Hatteras’ OAM implementation supports link monitoring, event indications, and loopback functionality as defined by 802.3ah. Hatteras has further extended 802.3ah OAM to provide additional visibility into individual copper pairs, into all ports and system parameters on the remote device, and to synchronize software version and configurations between the CO/RT and the CPE end – thus providing integrated management of both network elements across the 2BASE-TL link!
- A comprehensive set of statistics, counters, rolling 15-minute PM stats, events, and alarms provide accounting and exception data that can be used for real-time troubleshooting or after the fact for in-depth analysis. Statistics are provided for every Ethernet port, copper pair, OAM link, policer, as well as for STP and for storm control. Ethernet port statistics include a histogram for tracking packet sizes – along with packet and octet counts and various exceptions. Alarms are provided for equipment, facilities, OAM, and services – including an alarm if the bandwidth on a bonded port goes below a user-specified (SLA) minimum. Transient alarms – also known as threshold crossing alarms – are provided as “early warning signals” for degrading copper facilities – a valuable tool for catching facility problems before they become outages!
- SNMP traps can be enabled or disabled by category, and each category may be sent to a different trap host – which allows different classes of problems to be handled by different support groups or departments.
- The CLI is designed to be transparently used by anyone familiar with a Cisco CLI – and without a user guide nearby. The context-sensitive help provides word help and command syntax help. Convenience features such as tab complete eliminates mundane typing as well as errors. But most importantly, security and access control capabilities are provided such as access control lists (ACLs), SSH for encrypted telnet access, RADIUS for user administration, and a configuration audit log.
The Hatteras WebManager is an embedded GUI that supports all CLI functions through an easy-to-use graphical interface for rapid point-and-click operations, administration and maintenance. An intuitive menu system takes users directly to the functional area of interest. Alarms – by severity – are shown on every screen, so they will never be missed. Configuration options are displayed in drop-down menus. “Help” buttons are provided on most screens, providing detailed background information – without having to have a user manual close by. Complex information is organized and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand – and minimizes the possibility of operator error. And because WebManager is accessed using standard HTTP, no special application is required – just access the WebManager from any PC with a browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox!
The Hatteras EMS is a GUI-based, multi-user system that enables operations, troubleshooting and provisioning with the same look-and-feel and intuitive interface as the WebManager.
In addition, the EMS provides applications that are especially useful for managing large networks:
- Equipment Inventory Management. Show equipment in one or all domains. Automatic device discovery. Display by systems, CPE devices, and other criteria. Show IP management IP address, NE name, model, hardware and software revisions, and other info.
- Software Upgrades and Version Control. Manage software revision control from a single screen – for the entire network.
- Configuration Archive/Restore. Backup and restore configuration files to an FTP server. From one screen, view the status of all configuration files and archive one or all network elements with a single click. Automatic daily archiving of modified configurations is also available. Hatteras configuration files are Cisco-like text files, ideal for offline viewing and manipulation.
- Alarm Monitoring. View alarms network wide, by severity and type.
- Reliable SNMP Trap Aggregation and Forwarding. Ensure reliable alarm capture, even during network faults. Forward aggregated alarms to a northbound alarm management system. Specific traps can be filtered and forwarded to various destinations. Works for TL1 as well as SNMP. All EMS screens have easy search filters to quickly find needed information. From there, results are organized in easy-to-read tables with fast one-click column sorting and moveable columns to make information organization a snap!
